Reminder: I wrote this at 4:30 am, and hyped up on three Grande mocha lattes at the time...it may be shaky... you are to be' warned. Now on to the story!!

The Communicator

I am now in the Great Forest...I wonder where Knothole is, in this great bush. I've seen something up ahead; an older woman is walking along with an elderly blue hedgehog at her side. His every step is wavering; he is talking to the woman who is helping him along the side of the lake.

'W-When are we going to get there, Sally?'

His quavering voice asks her, she then patted his hand thoughtfully, and replied,

'Soon, Uncle Chuck, soon; we're almost there. Why don't we enjoy this nice day we're having today?'

She smiled warmly at him; he just grumbled under his breath a bit at her, then sighed and tried to enjoy it with her.

My communicator crackled loudly,

'Commander St. John! Where the devil are you?'

The lady turned her head to where I was, I heard her whisper,

'Geoffrey?'

She took a step towards me, and said it again, louder.

'Geoffrey?!?'

I stood up in the bush, my long black and white tail whipping behind my back. The old woman squinted at me hard, trying to discern who I was. I shifted uncomfortably in my green boots. The communicator crackled again.

'COMMMANDER ST. JOHN! COME IN!'

'Blast! Commander Delia St. John here, come in...!'

I barked into the device.

'*crackle* Give me that! NOW! *crackle, BZZT* Delia, sorry 'bout that, little Manic got ahold of the radio;--uh, well...have you found Knothole yet?'

'Yes, err....'

I glanced at the old woman and the even older hedgehog; though he was more interested in the golden coyote that was coming down the path. The old woman had her eyes fixed on me; intensely. I decided that it was all right.

'Yes, Father; I found it, you can come in here now.'

The old woman is coming closer to me; I notice that she is only wearing a threadbare blue vest, as well as old, beat-up, knee-high boots. Her face is lined deeply, a care-worn face, a loving face...the face of a grand----THE FACE OF OUR QUEEN!!

I quickly get to one knee, and bow before her, mumbling my apologizes. She walks up to me, and takes my chin in her hand and lifts it delicately up towards her own face.

'You're not Geoffrey....... are you?'

I shake my head vigorously.

'No...No your majesty...I'm not.'

'You don't need to call me 'your majesty', just Sally will do.'

She smiled, and then a frown crossed her face...

'Were you talking to Geoffrey?'

'Yes, I was. Would you like to talk to him?'

I handed her the communicator, whereupon she pressed the button, and she spoke into it.

'*BZZT* Yes, General. What do-*crackle*-you need?'

'This is Queen Sally Hedgehog...I need to ask a question of you.'

'*crackle* Certainly, Sally! *crackle, BZZT* Ask away!'

She looked over at me with a worried expression; I just nodded my head...

'Ok, General. Do you...do you have Sir Geoffrey St. John there?'

There were mumbles from the communicator, and then the general came back on.

'Uh, no, Queen Sally------he's dead. You were even at his funeral...don't you remember?'

I heard everything...but I just---I just talked to him, I did! Didn't I? I collapse on the ground in front of Sally......my head is hurting again like the last time.......I hear her drop the communicator.....then I suddenly see......brown boots in front of me........

'Weren't her boots blue?' I wonder, in a pain-filled haze.

'Commandire!! What are you doing? You have been missing from zee hospital for''

He glanced at his watch right then.

'Zut Alors!! You-you have been missing for eight hours!!'

I look over and I hear 'brown boots' talking to me...'brown boots' is actually General Antoine De'Coolette.

'I should be over him. But'But, I am not sick! I do not need to be in a hospital!! I'm healthy!'

My mind is racing, Antoine, the head nurse of the Knothole Army Base Medical Hospital'is now wrapping a white jacket around me.

'GET THIS OFF OF ME!!'

I am now yelling my head off, complaining about the jacket, and about going back to the hospital.

'DE'COOLETTE! GET THIS OFF OF ME RIGHT NOW!'

Antoine looks down into my face, and pulls out a large syringe.....it's filled with a blue-green liquid that I've come to hate......then he injects it into my neck. I am seeing three of everyone, and suddenly everything goes black.

'Yez, Sally; she tinks zat she iz hearing her Fatherire through heer walkie-talkie. She haz been reputed to be running down zee hall whenever a telephone iz ringing!'

Antoine looks into the padded room that Delia is in, she's sleeping peacefully now.

'Where's the communicator right now? I'd like to look closely at it, sees if it's normal.'

Sally told Antoine, then accepted the device from him. She pressed the button on the front, and got complete static.

Three days later, she took the communicator to Rotor, she remembered to tell him she actually heard something-someone's voice come out of it. Rotor greeted her at the door, and they talked about everything that happened the week before.

'So, she claimed she heard Geoffrey talking to her? That's impossible.'

Rotor replied,

'And anyway, you said you heard someone- not Geoffrey, though 'but someone else, right?'

'Yes, someone else responded when I pressed the button.'

'That's impossible too, Sally. This thing hasn't worked in years, look.'

He then opened the back of the device, and there was nothing in it, no circuits, no wires...nothing. Sally gasped,

'Then how.................I heard him............How?'
